Environment & People

Sustainability at every step

Today's consumers look for products with a real story — not just a green label. With Nordlys Viking, you offer your customers genuine craftsmanship rooted in respect for both people and the environment, drawing on traditions that go back to the Viking Age.

As a retailer, you gain more than a product line. You get a compelling narrative to share with your customers — and we're happy to help you tell it.

Circular thinking at every stage

We're committed to increasing the share of recycled and renewable materials across our range. Already, most of our wrought iron comes from industrially recycled sources, and we're steadily expanding the use of recycled brass, textiles and wood.

Plastic reduction is a priority at every stage. All B2B shipments go out without any virgin plastic — we reuse boxes and packing materials rather than buying new. When our producers ship to us in plastic, we sort it and repurpose it as filling material. Our goal: reduce, reuse, and ultimately phase out unnecessary plastic altogether.

Craftsmanship with a lighter footprint

Handmade products carry an inherently lighter carbon footprint. There are no large factories to build, no heavy machinery to power, no complex industrial infrastructure. Instead, production relies on human skill, age-old tradition and simple tools.

By pairing these traditional methods with modern environmental standards, we create products that are authentic, responsible and full of meaning — giving your customers a story worth sharing, and your business a credible environmental edge.

We work directly with artisans in India and Nepal — partnerships built over more than 20 years. Working conditions are at the heart of how we choose our producers: fair wages, freedom to organise and a safe, healthy workplace are non-negotiable.

We also look closely at environmental practices, selecting partners who invest in wastewater treatment and responsible waste management. Beyond production, we support initiatives that make a real difference — women's cooperatives that build economic independence, and education programmes for children growing up in artisan communities.

Every year we personally visit our producers in India and Nepal. We know the people behind every product — and that makes all the difference.

We go where the craft is made

Packaging & Delivery

Reused boxes — All B2B shipments are packed in reused cardboard boxes. We never buy new cardboard for outbound deliveries.

Zero virgin plastic — Our outbound shipments contain no virgin plastic. Plastic packaging from our producers is sorted and reused as filling material.

Paper-based protective wrapping — Where possible, we use paper-based materials instead of plastic to protect products during transport.

Continuous improvement — Our goal is to constantly reduce, reuse, and ultimately eliminate all unnecessary packaging throughout the supply chain.

Ongoing Improvements

We see sustainability as an ongoing journey, not a finished result. Here are some of the areas we are actively working on:

Increasing recycled brass — We are working with our foundries to progressively increase the share of recycled brass in all casting.

Reducing producer plastic — We maintain an active dialogue with our producers about reducing plastic use in their outbound packaging.

New circular materials — We are testing innovative materials, including leather alternatives based on fruit industry by-products.

Ukrainian birch production — Our new wooden toy production in Ukraine uses European birch, resulting in shorter transport distances and lower carbon footprint compared to Asian timber.

Traceability — We are working to improve traceability throughout the supply chain to provide even clearer information about each product's origin.

Living Craft Traditions

Industrialisation and mass production threaten traditional craft knowledge worldwide. Many techniques passed down through generations risk disappearing within a single generation.

By selling Nordlys Viking products, you actively contribute to keeping these traditions alive. Our orders provide artisans with stable income and an incentive to pass on their skills.

Glass beads — Hand-formed in northern India using techniques passed down through generations. Each bead is heated over an open flame and shaped by hand.

Felt products — Made by women from vulnerable groups in Nepal. The production uses only warm water, soap and water-based non-toxic dyes, and everything is done by hand without machines. Each product provides economic independence for women in vulnerable communities.

Stocking these products means actively supporting living cultural heritage — a story that engages conscious consumers.
