Necklace Byzantium
A simple cross in pewter and natural fiber, suspended from a leather cord and a rosary-inspired link. The Byzantine Empire was predominantly Christian, and the cross was a common and powerful symbol. We have drawn inspiration from the arduous journeys and often impoverished lives of contemporary pilgrims. This necklace is part of our design series of complete pagan necklaces, where we combine various historical pendants with leather, bone, and horn to create Viking jewellery suitable for everyone, then as now. Since organic materials like leather, wood, and horn do not survive in the ground over time, we do not know much about what Viking jewellery looked like. What we do find is the metal, stone, and glass that has been preserved. With these necklaces, we have therefore created a vision of how this jewellery may have been assembled and worn. For the pendants and other metal details, we have used a casting alloy that is completely free from nickel, lead, and cadmium. The metal has either a bronze or pewter finish.
