Nordlys Viking
Viking Dress Code
As the name suggests, the book is designed as a reference work full of facts and well-founded conclusions regarding Viking fashion and clothing choices. This gives the reader a unique insight into what Vikings actually wore and which accessories and adornments completed their outfits. The book begins with a chronological and geographical review of the archaeological finds and depictions that form the basis of today's knowledge about Viking clothing.
Then the author continues with a review of textiles, leather and other materials used by the Vikings, as well as a section on the tools and techniques used to decorate the outfits. Among other things, plant dyeing, nalbinding, embroidery and tablet weaving have their own sections. Everything is easily explained and illustrated with photos and sketches that give the information good depth.
The third part of the book goes through Viking clothing divided by the regions of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, presented chronologically. The outfits are also divided into men's and women's attire. Here, the author systematically goes through the existing finds and explains ongoing techniques, design and how fashion changes over time. The reader is treated to an enormous wealth of detail and fantastic fashion sketches that vividly present how the clothing might have looked. There is plenty here for both the truly dedicated nerd and anyone wanting inspiration for their Viking wedding.
Clearly a book we at Nordlys recommend everyone with an interest in Vikings to have on their bookshelf.
