The Viking sagas tell how the god Heimdall used his horn to warn the other gods of danger and to bring messages to humans. In the Icelandic sagas, the horn is described as a war instrument, used both to direct the troops and to scare the enemy. Different types of horns have been found during excavations of warships, among other places. The oldest find of a horn in Sweden is about 2000 years old and thus older than the Viking Age. Our horn is approximately 40 cm long and handmade from natural horn in one piece, with a carved mouthpiece at the tip. It is played using roughly the same technique as a trumpet.
